The Fairhaven Community Concert Series has officially finished the 2007-2008 season with a sizable donation back to the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven’s handicapped accessibility fund. The FCCS is now looking forward to a sixth season of concerts which will continue to provide quality listening experiences for the greater New Bedford area.
In keeping with our goals, this season promises to bring a very interesting mix of music to the center of Fairhaven and all for a very good price” said Peg Rogers, committee co-chairperson at The First Congregational Church of Fairhaven where the concerts are held. “We are trying to bring music into town that folks would often have to travel to Boston for a chance to experience.”
The series has grown over the first four years, attracting a modest group of season ticket holders and many visitors, depending on the attraction. “We do have our faithful regulars but the overall attendance has grown, bit by bit. We see new faces all the time because we have continued to shift the styles of music around,” said Rogers.
Past concerts have featured some very unique sounds such as African drumming and most recently one of the best jazz steel drum players in the world, Ron Reid. Both of those programs were made possible through local percussion legend Danny Schwartz and his long list of music contacts. Rogers says “it is a challenge to try to balance classical music, jazz groups, folk music, and even world music on the same series but this does allow for people to either choose what they want to hear or try things that they might never have heard before.”
The programs in October, February, and May will also have an optional dinner to go along with the evening’s feature presentation. All concerts and dinners are held at The First Congregational Church located at 34 Center Street in Fairhaven. The concert committee is currently soliciting advertising and sponsorship. Rogers concludes “we know we have a great series of concerts lined up with a real mix of musical styles so our hope is that more people will be able to come out and experience some great live music in Fairhaven.”
